Swamp Thunder 10-14 October 2019

Who: RPA Members, but others are invited regardless of formation experience or background.

When: 10-14 October. Arrive before 1500 on Thursday, 10 October for registration and to begin academic training. Depart Monday, 14 October or Columbus Day.  Detailed schedule TBP.

Where: Waycross, GA (KAYS)

What: Formation Training Clinic

- Need to know who needs what.  Reply back to me ASAP with the specific training you need along with your formation experience.  For example: “I’m a fairly new guy ("FNG") who has flown a few formation hops with my buddy, but need the basic ground school and progression through the gates.  The goal is to obtain my wing card by next fall.” Or “I’m an experienced wingman, but would like to upgrade to flight lead.  I’ve got about 200 hours as wingman and have been practicing leading two and four ship missions.”

- If you need basic formation ground school it will start Thursday afternoon at 1600.  NOTE: To catch up, you’ll need to watch this video before you arrive at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zuHAhTQDVM&feature=youtu.be You MUST also download print then read and study the RPA Formation Manual from the RPA Website (https://flyredstar.starchapter.com/content.php?page=Library) or you may purchase it from the RPA Store. You need to practice as much as possible prior to the clinic.  Point being, DO NOT come to this clinic with little or no prior formation training or experience and expect to leave with a wing card.  Same with former military aviators… you cannot expect to receive your wing card after attending one formation clinic.  Being a competent and safe formation pilot requires extensive training and practice.

- I’m still pulling together the academic training schedule, but expect this first evening is oriented towards ground training - read no flight ops on Thursday for Fun New Guys (FNGs).  However, for the more experienced Dudes, let’s get in the air and get some warm-up flights going.

- Flight ops will begin Thursday afternoon for the carded pilots with two-ship ops progressing to four-ship parade formations.  If you've flown formation in the preceding 30 days, then this will count as your "warm up" for this clinic.  Friday morning, following a MANDATORY safety briefing, we will begin full-up flight ops that will continue for the remainder of the weekend.

Logistics:

- Lodging: Instead of blocking rooms at a group rate, you may save money by making your own room reservations.  For example, the Quality Inn was $74 when I called them for the group rate, yet when I looked online, the nonrefundable rate was only $40 and the refundable rate was $54... So, you make the choice and save money by booking online.  I've included the phone numbers to the three hotels we normally use below, but for the best savings use google.

    - Quality Inn   912-283-4490 (price about $50)

    - Hampton Inn  912-285-5515 (price about $90)

    - Holiday Inn 912-548-0720 (price about $110)

- Ground Transportation, Friday and Saturday catered lunch, Saturday night dinner included with event fee.

- Meals: Friday and Saturday catered lunches at the airport are included with the event fee.  Saturday night dinner is included.  Friday night dinner is NO HOST with several restaurants near the hotel.

- Fuel and Hangers:  Discounted fuel as well as hangers for $10/night. First come first serve on the hangers.

- Fees/Costs:  At this writing, the expected event fee that includes all of the above for around $100… but still TBD depending on the number who RSVP.

Inclement WX plan:

- Classes in the am, lunch then if continued bad wx travel to Douglas, GA for tour of warbird (B-17, XP-82 and others) restoration facility.
